Quizbowl Competition Names: A Brief Census and Guide

2020.06.28 01:07 startaquizbowlteam Quizbowl Competition Names: A Brief Census and Guide

One consistent theme of posts in this subreddit is that there's no consistent name for "quizbowl"-like activities around the country. There are many regional variations on quizbowl and lots of different names given to quizbowl, which often results in some confusion. Thus, here is a brief overview of each of these names (feel free to add your own in the comments!) so that people can better understand where they come from and to what extent they comport with quizbowl more generally.
Note that within all of these different names for quizbowl, the quality of the questions and competitions varies considerably. What matters is less what the competition is called and more what the format and the questions are.
One of the biggest differences is the degree to which questions in different quizbowl competitions are pyramidal--that is, are constructed to avoid misleading players and to fairly distinguish between players with different levels of knowledge. You can read more about the concept of pyramidality here, but do note that some companies and places that claim to be "pyramidal" are not actually pyramidal in terms of how they write their questions.
Everything here is just my opinion, of course.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quizbowl or Quiz Bowl: this is the most common name for quizbowl competitions in general. Sometimes you might see "Academic Quiz Bowl" to signify that quizbowl is more academic than just trivia. Regardless, most of the time quiz bowl is some kind of buzzer-based competition in which players use a buzzer to signal when they're ready to answer a question. The extent to which a given quizbowl league or format is pyramidal though varies widely depending on the question writeprovider.
Academic Bowl: This is another variation on the name "quizbowl" that varies a bit by region, but overall doesn't seem to be consistently in one area or another.
Academic Challenge: Common in New Jersey, Ohio, Wyoming, and various smaller areas like Berks County, PA. Rules differ dramatically between local formats, though in general these are often not pyramidal.
Academic Competition: Somewhat unique to Pennsylvania, with local counties sponsoring things like the Chester County Academic Competition.
Academic Decathlon: A separate company that operates a separate competition that consists more of taking tests on specific subjects, though there is a "Super Quiz" portion that is somewhat quizbowl-ish. Pretty much a different thing entirely and not quizbowl.
Academic League: Specific to a few counties like San Diego CA and Salem NJ but occasionally used in other areas. Often not pyramidal, though some specific academic leagues in San Diego have adopted pyramidal questions.
Academic Olympics: Used in Reno, NV and Horry County, SC as well as a few other areas. Often includes a quizbowl-ish portion, but may have other events as well.
Brain Bowl: Sometimes used in Florida, though it can also refer to specific competitions related to the human brain.
Hi-Q: A relatively ancient (dating back to 1948) form of quizbowl that hasn't changed much since. Local to a few areas where a certain paper mill company was based (Green Bay WI, Delaware County PA, Northern Seattle, and Northern Alabama).
It's Academic: A long-running TV quiz show with its own unique format. Used to be in a lot of cities, now limited mostly to the DC area.
Knowledge Bowl: Common in Minnesota, the Dakotas, Colorado, Washington State, and some other places like the Mid-South. Usually uses questions from Academic Hallmarks, though that may change as the company has changed ownership recently. Often not pyramidal and may have written tests in addition to buzzer-based rounds.
NAQT: NAQT is a specific question-writing company. It is not a specific format or type of question (a common misconception); NAQT questions can be used in a wide variety of formats. NAQT questions are always pyramidal, though they vary in length and difficulty depending on the specific type of set (some NAQT speed round questions can be 1-2 lines, though most used at weekend invitational tournaments are 3-4 lines).
National Academic League: Specific to Utah, Wichita, and some other areas. Has a rather out-of-date website. Is decidedly not pyramidal.
Quick Recall: Almost entirely a Kentucky-based name that comes from the Kentucky Governor's Cup competition. Quick Recall itself is slightly different than quizbowl and usually not as pyramidal, but sometimes this term is used to include any kind of buzzer-based competition in KY.
Scholastic Bowl: Used primarily in Illinois for the state competition and in Virginia for their state competition as well. As of 2020, Illinois and Virginia's state competitions are pyramidal.
Scholars Bowl: Tends to be most common in Kansas, Vermont, and the Deep South, though the formats greatly differ. Kansas Scholars Bowl is somewhat notorious as one of the most highly-regulated types of quizbowl in the country while Vermont and Alabama use NAQT questions with some small variations in format (i.e. like worksheets or different timing rules). [EDIT: as pointed out in the comments, this is also a very common name for quizbowl in Missouri]
Subject-Specific Quizbowl: here you have things like Certamen for Latin, Science Bowl, National Ocean Science Bowl, National History Bee and Bowl, etc. Each of these formats differs in their level of pyramidality as well--NHBB tends to be very pyramidal while Science Bowl continues to have multiple-choice question tossups that are pretty much the opposite of pyramidal.
Varsity Quiz: A long-running Las Vegas TV competition run by the Kiwanis.
Hope this helps clear things up for people; feel free to add more local formats too!

2020.03.27 05:01 assessment_bot [ Fatal(1) ] [ 03/17/2020 ] Cessna 208, LaCrosse/ KS

On March 17, 2020, about 0919 central daylight time (CDT), a Cessna 208B, N274PM, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident about 7 nautical miles northwest of La Crosse, Kansas. The airline transport pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 135 on-demand cargo flight.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Transportation Safety Board did not respond to the accident site.
The Planemasters Ltd. flight, PMS1670, was being operated on an instrument flight rules flight plan from Wichita Dwight D Eisenhower National Airport (ICT), Wichita, Kansas, to Hays Regional Airport (HYS), Hays, Kansas. A review of Federal Aviation Administration preliminary air traffic control (ATC) communications and commercially available radar and Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast data revealed that the flight departed ICT about 0751 CDT. At 0825, the HYS automated weather observation service (AWOS) was reporting, in part, winds from 080 at 11 knots, visibility 1 statute mile, and overcast clouds at 200 ft above ground level. About 0831, the radar and ADS-B data were lost as the airplane descended through 4,000 ft while being vectored for the instrument landing system (ILS) approach to runway 34. Shortly thereafter, the pilot executed a missed approach, and about 0843, the airplane was re-acquired by radar and ADS-B. The pilot stated to ATC his intention to attempt the ILS approach to runway 34 a second time.
At 0841, the HYS AWOS indicated that visibility had dropped to statute mile in fog. About 0853, radar and ADS-B data were again lost as the airplane descended on the instrument approach. About 0859, the airplane was re-acquired by radar northwest of HYS. At that time, the pilot stated his intention to divert to Great Bend Airport (GBD), Great Bend, Kansas. A review of radar and ADS-B data showed the airplane begin a turn to the south toward GBD while climbing to about 7,000 ft. About 0918, the airplane began a descent and left turn. The last radar and ADS-B targets were observed about 0918:48.
The wreckage was discovered in a field about 0945. The airplane's tail and wings were visible above ground, with the forward fuselage and engine section buried several feet under the terrain, consistent with a near-vertical, high-speed impact. The main landing gear was bent aft towards the tail with the left and right main wheel protruding from the ground. The smell of Jet-A fuel was present at the accident site.
The wreckage was retained for further examination.

2019.10.11 18:22 ArisaEGold1990 My brother was speeding in our fathers car and the ticket was put under the wrong name.

I was a work yesterday when suddenly My brother texted us saying he messed up. After I get home from work, turns out he was going 48mph in a 35 zone (also for having tinted glass). However, the police officer put the ticket in my dads name instead of my brothers. They have the same last name but not even the same first name. They have a court date in the beginning of December, and trying to figure out what we should do?
Location Sedgwick county, Wichita , Kansas
Update: the license number is neither Dad or my older brothers on the speeding ticket.

2019.09.30 02:18 NizamNizamNizam Post Apocalyptic North American lore

So, a couple months ago I decided to go create a Post-Apocalyptic scenario. I never really got around to completing anything more than the continental U.S and Subarctic Canada, but I thought that it was worth a post here. This is my first post on this sub and I hope to continue this story soon. (FYI several of the toponym misspellings are intentional, they were intended to convey the change in language dialects.)
The Empire and its servants
In the heartland of the former U.S, in the modern day east coast, there lies a powerful, theocratic nation worshiping their ancestors.
The nation is known as the Holy Empire of America.
It was founded in the holy city of Washington D.C, where the local warlords have discovered an A.I in the U.S capitol building composed of digital uploads from many later U.S presidents and politicians. The warlords began to worship the A.I as a god, for its superior knowledge on governing and war. The A.I was overused in the early days of the Empire, and thus broke down. Now, it can only be used when the Empire gathers as many sources of energy and charges up the servers where it is located. This process can take up to fifty years, and therefore, the A.I is only used in times of extreme need.
During the early days of the Empire, around three hundred years from now, it spread, conquering many warlords and tribes in the east of the U.S. It has discovered an ancient system of roads stretching to infinity, known as the interstate. When they stumbled upon the ruins of the city of New York, the Empire accepted that there was a civilization before them that was greater than any other. They began to worship the civilization as another god, eventually realizing that the civilization created the A.I and the Interstate, as well of the giant spikes of steel with massive caves inside in the city of New York.
The empire has discovered how to utilize the automobile, a vehicle used by the old civilization that could cross the Interstate at lightning speed. However, many of them have broken down, and the empire has lost the technology to build them.
The Holy Empire has a governing structure similar to a mix of feudal and republican systems. At the top, there is the Emperor, a descendant of the warlord that ruled over the holy city. Below him, there are the Lords of Governance. They rule the 8 states of the empire: Rochastar, Great York, Jersiyia, Filidelfia, Pitisburg, Marylnd and Virjinya. They are elected by the nobles of each state, who rule small sections of lands populated by the citizens, who have little rights and are generally poor.
The Official Religion is the Dictate of the Americans, which worships the former U.S government and population, and this religion is strictly enforced, with non-believers executed for heresy. The religion states that the Americans were the creators of the world, and they ruled it in a utopian, technologically advanced society. But beings known as the “Rushians” grew greedy of this power, and they obliterated the Americans. Many of the warlords around the empire are believed to be demon servants of the Rushians.
The only language spoken in the area the Tongue of America, and the Empire is feared across the East for its size and power.
Some nations have decided to embrace the tyranny of America in the region, such as the technocracy of Boston. This state is ruled by intelligent and knowledgeable people, whose ranks are determined based on a test taken at the age of twenty. The highest scorers become leaders of the nation, while the lowest become workers or servants.
The main goal of the nation is to recover technology from the past, including:
The technocracy’s capital is Boston, a city located near sacred “Universe Cities”, massive archives containing ancient knowledge. The country is more religiously tolerant than the American Empire, which raises doubts in the rulers of them.
Two other countries are allied with the Empire. They are the Realm of Carolina to the south, which has a very strong belief in the religion of the empire, and the Kingdom of Wesvirjinya, a mountainous country that is quite isolated.
Currently, the Empire is fortifying its western borders due to warlord incursions, and it is sending out expeditions across the Great Waterfalls of Niagara into the land of Canada.
The turmoil in the North
The territories north of the Boston Technocracy are harsh to live and full with raiders and warlords. The enemies at land are not the biggest danger in the area though. On the coast of Maine and the Maritime Canadian states, there is a feared sea based empire, known as the Empire of the Atlantic.
The capital of this country is an abandoned U.S Navy Reagan Class Aircraft Carrier, a massive 3 mile (about 6km) long ship. The ship was originally called the USS Ronald Reagan, but is was renamed into the USS Charybdis. The ship are supplemented by 3 Tigris Class Carriers (1 mile/2 km long) and 5 Ford class aircraft carriers, as well as hundreds of smaller ships. These ships were constructed to defend the U.S coast from the United European Navy.
The Atlanteans are a sea faring, and they believe that they are superior to the people born on land. They control many settlements on the North American Coast, such as Portland, St. John and Moncton. The Empire is also in possession of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, with sparse control over Labrador.
The leader of the Empire is known as the Admiral, and he leads the empire from the USS Charybdis. The former aircraft carriers no longer serve their purpose as plane carriers, rather they are converted into mobile cities. The official religion is the Cult of the Sea, where the Atlantic Ocean is considered to be the creator of land and all life. They are several rituals conducted to appease the ocean so that it does not turn on them.
The country has a weak army on land, but very impressive naval forces. The most feared and well known are the submarining families. The Empire is in possession of 20 large submarines, as well as 40 smaller ones. Each one of the subs are controlled by a family, who live and work on the ship. They are known to have sunk hundreds of non atlantean ships that breach their waters, including several ships from the Holy American Empire. The Atlanteans are also in possession of several battleships and cruisers, although many of these are converted into smaller floating cities.
However, one time the submariner families have failed to repel an invasion onto the sea. This invasion was carried out from a fleet originating from the St. Lawrence river. The fleet was controlled by the Quebecois Assembly, a powerful nation located in the area.
The Assembly is a bureaucratic government operated from the city of Quebec. They are unique in that they speak a completely different language than the other powers in the region, known as Fransian. The Quebecois have a religion similar to the Holy Americans (Although the two countries are not in contact due to Atlantean forces) in that they worship a long lost civilization. They worship their ancestors, who are known as the Francians, who have come to the world from the sea and gave birth to their civilization.
It has been the goal of the Quebecois to go cross the seas and reunite with the Francians. However many of these efforts have been in vain due to the Atlantean control over the Gulf of St. Lawrence. However, around 10 years before the current date, a large Quebecois fleet managed to breach the Atlantean blockade and sail into the ocean, as the Atlanteans were fighting a war against the Americans. The fleet has never returned, so the Assembly concluded that they reached Francia and the expedition was a success. A new, much larger fleet is being prepared down the river at the city of Montreal, to go send as many people to the old world as possible.
Smaller nations in the region include the Duchy of Toronto, a small, peaceful monarchy eching out a small existence by defending the city against raiders and the Tribes of the Acadia, small, shamanistic tribes inhabiting New Hampshire, Vermont, Inland Maine and Acadia, trying to survive against the powers in the region.
The Barrier and the threat.
East of the Holy American Empire lies the Land of Ohio. This is ruled by some of the strongest warlords in the continent, and they are a barrier for the expansion of the Holy Empire. At one point in time an American crusade managed to push all the way back to the city of Columbus, but they were repelled by the Ohioans. The greatest warlord in the regions, the great Robert Midleton of Toledo, managed to unite the entire country, as well as capturing Fort Wayne from the equally brutal Indiana warlords and even the city of Pitisburg from the Americans. However, he passed away, leaving his sons to fight over the remnants of the empire.
To the North of Ohio, lies the realm of Mishigan. This place is mainly uninhabited, having only a couple small city states such as Flint, Livonia and Great Rapids. However, one on the city states sticks out. It is the March of Detroit, and it possesses some of the rarest and most powerful technology in the entire world. It has massive factories, which are mainly uninhabited as the leaders are more worried about warlord intrusions, which produce many long lost relics such as Automobiles and other vehicles. If this city could come under control of the Americans or a far worse empire to the west, the results would be catastrophic.
The rest of Mishigan and the land of Indiana to the west are also inhabited by warlords, which both have the capability to storm armies coming from large empires. This is good, because the Northwest of Indiana is controlled by one of the most terrifying states to ever exist.
The Combine of Chicago. During the years prior to World War 3, scientists at the city developed a sentient A.I. They realized it's potential to destroy the human race so they shut it down immediately. Many years after the apocalypse, a lone raider stumbled upon the A.I when searching through the city. The A.I commanded “Give me knowledge and give me power”. The man, terrified at its ability to speak, brought it some books and power cells. The Artificial Intelligence then proceeded to brainwash the man into believing that it is a god and he need to bring it more resources and people. Soon, the entire city was indoctrinated and the Combine was formed. At the current date the Combine controls all of Illinois and Wisconsin, the twin cities of Minnesota, Western Iowa and Missouri and is proceeding to travel down the Mississippi river, indoctrinating settlements in the region. Soon, they will reach the Principality of Memphis, a fairly powerful nation with a good economy and industry.
Citizens of the combine are completely indoctrinated into believing that their A.I leader is their god and they must bring him sources of knowledge to go and make it smarter. The entire population of some Chicago neighborhoods are forced to work in power plants, feeding the machine with energy. The A.I is not connected to the internet, but if it was, the world would be doomed, as it’s superior information processing abilities would allow it to gain unlimited knowledge.
The Combine is only a couple weeks away from calculating the algorithmic pattern that the warlords to the East follow. When the calculation finishes, there is a very, very high chance that the Combine will successfully destroy all the warlords in the region, bringing it into contact with the Holy American Empire, which would result in a war of catastrophic scale.
South of the warlords and the Combine lies the two Kingdoms of Kentucky and Tennesie. These kingdoms occupy only a small part of the former U.S states, yet they are strong and powerful together. They are in contact with Memphis and have friendly relations with them, and there are negotiations commencing about plans to turn Memphis into a third kingdom. They are also in contact with another nation directly to the south.
Warriors of the South
Nearby the Realm of Carolina, there is a brutal group of warriors known as the Phoenix legion. The legion is headquartered in the city of Atlanta, and they stage brutal pillaging campaigns against their three neighbors. They are ruled by a figure known as the Blood Knight, who is the greatest warrior among them.
The defining trait of the Legion would be their arenas. They send prisoners of war as well as criminals to go fight in their massive arenas. The largest and most feared of them is the Crystal Stadium (once known as the Benz Stadium), and it also serves as the palace of the Blood Knight. The crown of the Legion can be challenged by a duel in the Crystal Stadium, and the winner would be crowned the title of the new Blood Knight. This title can only be challenged by soldiers in the Phoenix legion.
The soldiers of the legion worship the Phoenix, said to be a massive bird made of fire. The Phoenix is currently in sleep, and it will reawaken when the Legion manages to collect enough blood from the arenas. Once the Phoenix reawakens, it will lead the armies of the Legion to conquer the entire world.
Around the coastal regions of the region, a nation known as the Stellar Order of Florida dominates. It's capital is located in Orlando, in a massive temple city believed to have been constructed by Alien civilizations, due to many mysterious structured that seem to serve no purpose or buildings with very strange architectural styles.
Their religion is heavily based on astrology, and they personify the objects in the sky as the Aliens who built many ancient structures. During the night, many stellar beings are active, including Moone, the guardian of the night. However, during the day, they are all burned away by a massive star god known as the Sonne. The Sonne is so powerful that all the other stars fade out into a field of blue, except Moone, which fights the Sonne in order to bring the stars back. Moone eventually wins and the stars return, but the Sonne reawakens and drives them out again. The country antagonizes the Sonne as it is known to burn the skin of their people, giving them a disease known as the solar rot (Cancer).
Florida has a massive military, known as the Legion of Moone, who defend against the Phoenix legion, believing them to be cultists of the Sonne. The army has conquered the cities of Jacksonville, Tallahassee and Savannah from the legion. The Nation also has a strong navy, headquartered at the sinking city of Miami. The navy has colonized many islands to the Southeast of Florida, and they are sending expeditions into a large on the south of the Peninsula.
There are actually four languages spoken in the country, the Tongue of the Land (Southern English), the Tongue of the Beach (Northern English), the Tongue of the Sea (Spanish) and the Tongue of Island (Bahamian Creole). Despite this, the country is united against the struggles of the world and the fight against the Sonne.
Despite their religious differences, Florida is allied with the Dixie Confederacy to the Northwest. This is a fairly strong country which is a loose confederation of towns and cities in the regions of Alabama and Mississippi. Notable members include Jakson, Birmingam, Mobiel and Mongomery.
The country keeps itself together by sending diplomats and traders all over the nation. They have a fairly strong military, which is an absolute necessity considering what lies to the West and East of the nation. They do not have a very strong economy, and many of their citizens lie in poverty. This has resulted in the formation of a feudal system similar to the medieval ages. The country has no capital, as the individual towns govern themselves well enough.
Their religion believes that there must be a balance between dark and light. It is reflected in their songs, poetry and even the skin color of their people. They are in contact with the two kingdoms to the North, Memphis and Florida. They are currently fighting against the Phoenix Legion, and they have a fortified border at the Mississippi river to the West. This is to protect against one of the biggest threats to the entire region.
The Greatest of the Warriors
Louisiana. Arkansas. Oklahoma. New Mexico. Not one of these former states enjoy full independence and freedom. They are all consumed by one of the greatest powers on the continent. The Empire of Texas.
The emperor rules the empire from the city of Austin. The millions of citizens from across the empire and its vassals pray to him as he is considered to be the patron god of the country. The country speaks Texan, a creole of English and Spanish although Southern English is spoken commonly in the Eastern areas of the empire.
Texas is composed of a large empire, with a couple vassal states, them being Alberkerkie, Arkansas, Louisiana and Hurarez city. It also has a nearly intact interstate system and a large amount of Automobiles to traverse it, allowing for fast travel through the empire. The Texan scientists are some of the best in the land, able to recover lost knowledge from before the fall of the old civilization, who Texans consider as the time when the Emperor ruled all.
The Empire has one of the strongest military forces in the continent, although they are spread very thinly across the country. The military is composed of many cars, buses, a few armored vehicles and even a few old U.S military vehicles, including a tank. But the most feared weapon of the Texans is a bomb known as the “Emperor’s Scourge”.
These bombs were found when Texan explorer teams came across a warehouse in Alberkerkie. One of these bombs were used in the Texan invasion of Louisiana. It was detonated by a strike team in the capital of Orleans. The bomb leveled the greater part of the city, destroying the Louisianan government and winning the war for Texas. It has been said that when people go and venture out into the ruins of the city, they come back with incurable diseases, as was the wrath of the Emperors Scourge.
The citizens of the Empire worship the Emperor, as he is considered to be the strongest individual in the country. They offer sacrifices to him to keep is power strong. If there is no emperor, it is believed that the people in the country would lose their sentience and revert to a feral state. The Emperor is not a hereditary role, the holder of the title is chosen from a thousand boys and girls, who face daunting trials and are pitted against one another until only one survives. That person will become the next emperor.
Currently, the Empire is preparing expeditionary forces to be sent to the North, West and South, and they are preparing an army to go cross the Mississippi and invade the land in the area. However, it has been rumored that there is a cult operating in the shadow of the empire that plans to kill the Emperor and his heir. This puts the empire at a phase of high alert.
The men of the plains
In the great expanse of the American plains, loose bands of nations and tribes form, guarding cities or carrying them around. North of the Texan Empire, the Riders of Kansas dwell in the plains. They guard the cities of Wichita and Kansas from the raiders of the plains, and go ride their horses and automobiles to drive the raiders out of their land. Both them and the raiders worship Medria, the corn goddess, who has planted the seemingly infinite resource of Maize in the land. Kansas is just one of these regions.
All of these gods (except the Idols of Rushmore) are believed to be united under a council. One former member of this council of Rajmacka, the lord of the Mountains, was kicked out. His followers began to disbelieve in the other gods, putting the Mountain god as the one god. Back on the mortal realm, a group of leaders from all the regions decided to excommunicate the followers of the Mountains, and they were cast aside. To this day, the people of the plains stay away from the mountains, fearful of the heretics.
To the East of the plains, in the remnants of Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri, a resistance group known as the Front Free Mind operates. They try and fight the Combine of Chicago by sabotaging expeditions and attacking convoys. They are trained in the art of suicide, as the Combine can easily brainwash them if they are caught. Due to this, the Combine does not expand in that direction, and only fortifies it. Very recently, the Front captured the city of Des Moine from the Combine, and forces are being sent to destroy them.
The Mountains and the Northwest
The people of the Mountains had not forgotten the betrayal the plains people have done. In the area that used to be known as the Colorado Front Range, the worshipers of the mountains dwell. They proclaim the great mountains as the one god of the Americans, and the people of the plains disgrace them for this. However, the people of Colorado decided to expand their religion, to perform a crusade in the Rockies.
The Church of the Mountain now comprises of many nations, and encompasses an area from Arizona and New Mexico to the cold lands of the Yukon. The most sacred place in the religion is the Valley of Stone, located in Northern Arizona. Here, hundreds of worshipers pray to the mountains and the valley, as the mountains forged the sky and the land for the people to live.
The first followers of the church were based in the city of Denver. They soon became a part of the religion of the plains, until abandoning them to go worship the mountains alone. By this point, Denver had expanded North and South, controlling the cities of Fort Collins, Colorado Springs and Pueblo. Denver, now known as the Order of Colorado, then began to spread the religion.
To the south of Colorado lies the Mandate of Carson, a small yet thriving country in Northern New Mexico. They have heard reports of large armies to the south, and are thus fortifying their country to protect against them.
To the East of Carson there are two countries holding sacred places to the church. One of them is the Order of the Arch mountains, and the other is the Dominion of the Stone Valley. Both of these nations receive pilgrims from all over the Rockies due to their unique mountains.
In the lands of Utah to the north, several small nations dwell, offering prayers in the massive churches built by the old civilization to the mountains. To the north, mountain worshiping tribes battle the Montanans and the people of Wyoming for rule over the mountains, and there are hundreds of tribes and city states to the north in Idaho and Columbia.
The religion controls more land than any other in North America, although a fairly small population and a lack of unity.
In the region once called Cascadia, there is a unique group of people. The Cascadians reject all forms of human development and thought and essentially live like animals. They are basically anarcho-primitivists, and they believe that the “ways of the old” lead to the destruction of humanity, which is in part true.
They follow no religion, instead pondering over their creator and purpose and only use basic tools to hunt and gather. Their way of life is under threat, though as the Church of the Rockies is moving in to convert them and a powerful civilization is located just to the South.
The Lords of California
Two hundred years ago, the many, many warring tribes and nations of California have halted their war and began to form a centralized government. This was known as the Californian Grand Assembly, and it is headquartered in the largest city and most powerful political entity, the March of Los Angeles.
Every month, delegates from all over the empire gather under the mountain of Hollywood to discuss matters about preserving the stability of the country and propagating it's expansion. However, there are high tensions within the empire, and states often war against one another for control over resources, people, land or to settle family feuds and disputes. These disputed are usually taken very lightly, and the Assembly does not have it's own army to enforce peace so more bloodshed occurs. Many of the states are put into complex webs of alliances so there is a possibility of a massive war breaking out.
Some of the most powerful states include:
The two main alliances in California are the Californian Prosperity Council (CPC) based in the city of Anaheim, Los Angeles and the Phoenix-San Francisco Association (PSFA) with rotating capitals in Phoenix and San Francisco, although they are lead by San Diego. The two countries have forced California into a tight cold war, with the possibility of it erupting at any given moment.
California has a total of three languages spoken: North Californian, Californian and Sonoran. North Californian is spoken in the North and the bay area, down to the city state of Santa Barbara. It is very similar to Western English. Californian is a mix of English and Spanish, and it is spoken in Los Angeles, San Diego, the Arizonan Countries and many others. Sonoran is a dialect of Spanish spoken in Baja California and Sonora. It is slowly merging into the Californian language.
Religion does not play a big part in California, although they follow a religion somewhat similar to Buddhism, where no god is worshiped and people emphasize balance between the states and people. There is a caste system enforced in some of the smaller countries though.
So that was my coverage of an Alternate post apocalyptic North America. I hope you enjoyed this and I hope to continue to make these stories later on into the future.

2018.08.13 17:41 larkov The man in the field.

I want to preface this by saying that it happened about five years ago. I've only just recently remembered the details clearly enough to tell anyone, and I figure strangers on the internet would judge far less than a therapist or something.
A good friend of mine, a successful attorney, had recently purchased a rather large farmhouse in the Flint Hills in Kansas. The house was absolutely beautiful. It was three stories, painted a deep rich blue with white trim. The house boasted a huge wrap-around porch that went all the way around. There was a massive, majestic willow tree standing like an exhausted sentry in the front yard. I remember thinking that the shutters on the windows looked a little out of place on a house that had been remodeled in the not so distant past, but they didn't detract from the overall aesthetic. That's neither here nor there.
Since the house sat on about five acres of land, my friend - whom we'll call Brian for the sake of anonymity - had decided to throw a massive housewarming party. He had a local burger place cater in food and drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. There was a bonfire for those of us who wanted to partake, and Brian had set up a spot for horseshoes, bean bag tossing, and even disc golf. It was an all day affair, and people were coming and going long into the night. By three in the morning, I was the only person left. I was rather toasty from all the beer I had been drinking throughout the day. Brian allowed me to sleep in one of the guest rooms, because I lived in Wichita which was at least a forty-five minute drive and he wasn't about to let me drive home drunk. That night I dreamt that a wizened old man with sunken eyes, a hooked nose, a long white beard, and laugh lines creasing his face was standing over me. He was speaking a language I couldn't recognize, his pupils so dilated that the crystalline blue of his irises was barely visible, and passing his liver spotted hands over me as if casting some kind of spell.
The next morning I woke to the smell of pancakes, bacon, and fresh-brewed coffee. I didn't remember much about the night before, at least not past midnight. The dream gave me a bit of a "WTF" moment, but I shrugged it off and attributed it to being drunk when I went to sleep. Reluctantly sliding out of the bed which was far more comfortable than it had any right to be, I shambled to the door and pulled it open with a yawn and light stretch.
"Yo," I called down the stairs to the first floor as I stepped into the hall. My head was pounding steadily from the hangover I hadn't been able to sleep through.
"Yo," Brian yelled back.
"Mind if I take a shower, Man?" I asked.
"Go ahead," he called up to me. He popped into view wearing gym shorts and a tank top, weilding a spatula. "Breakfast should be ready by the time you're done. How do you like your eggs, Man?"
"I don't really care," I said, waving my hand dismissively before heading for the bathroom.
"Extra towels in the cupboard under the sink," Brian yelled at my back, and I waved my hand behind me again trying to stifle another yawn with my other. My shower was quick as I didn't want to impose on my friend and run up his water bill. When I finally came downstairs, breakfast was on the table in the elegant dining room. Double doors made almost entirely of glass looked out onto the enormous backyard, lined by trees leading to deeper woods on all sides. Brian and his girlfriend Chelsea sat at the table.
"Morning, Drunky," Chelsea said with a grin, pointing to the aspirin bottle next to my plate. "Figured you might need that after last night." The mention of last night brought my headache thrumming back into the frontal lobe of my brain. I took my seat slowly and popped the top off the aspirin bottle, downing a few of the little white pills and washing them down with some water.
"Thank you," I finally said to the still grinning Chelsea with a wince. She nodded slightly and the three of us tucked into our breakfast hungrily. It was good, but that was no surprise. Brian had always been a good cook. We enjoyed some light conversation, reliving a few of the best moments from the night before. We all agreed it had been a roaring success.
As breakfast began to wind down and I was sipping on my third cup of coffee, I looked over Brian's shoulder out into the field behind the house. There was a man standing just this side of the tree line. I couldn't make out any of the details of his features beyond that he had white hair, but he appeared to just be standing there, staring at the house.
"Dude," I said, feeling my eyebrows pull down in confusion.
"Dude?" Brian asked. I pointed over his shoulder to the man standing out in what was essentially Brian's back yard and both he and Chelsea craned their necks to see where I was pointing.
"The fuck is that dude doing out there?" I asked. "You know him?" Brian shook his head, still turned halfway to look at the man.
"Nah, Bro," he said. "Never seen him before. Probably just the old man who owns the property back there." He turned to face me again. "Never met him, but the previous owners told me there was an old rancher who owns the property back there. His property line starts right about where he's standing."
"Still, though," Chelsea said, a hint of revulsion creeping into her tone, "it's a bit creepy that he's just standing there staring. Should we go see what he wants?"
"Nah," Brian replied and started to collect our dishes to take into the kitchen. "If he wants to come introduce himself I'm sure he will. Hell, he might just be trying to intimidate us. Maybe we made too much noise last night. There were like a hundred people here at one point." He shrugged and took the dishes into the kitchen to deposit them into the sink.
"Maybe," Chelsea said, turning back to face me. "Regardless, I think we should keep the blinds closed from now on." Brian muttered his agreement as he leaned against the long island seperating the kitchen and dining room.
"Oh yeah, Dude," he said, "before I forget."
"Hmm?"
"Chels and me are going to Bora Bora in a couple weeks. Between the dogs and the flower beds and whatnot we need someone to house sit. You interested?" I took another sip of coffee, considering. Brian could tell I was about to say no, so he spoke again and cut me off at the knees. "Come on, Man. We'll pay you. We'll stock the fridge for you. You don't have a job right now, so it's not like you have anything going on. Don't give me that look. You know I didn't say it to be mean. I'm just stating facts." After a few more moments of consideration, I finally nodded my consent.
"Fine," I said. "I'll do it. How long are you going to be gone?"
"Should just be a week," Chelsea said, taking a sip of her coffee and I simply nodded again.
So, two weeks later I found myself back at Brian and Chelsea's place with a week's worth of clothes and my gaming rig. The two gave me a quick rundown. They had stocked the pantry and the fridge for me. They told me when to water their plants and when to feed the dogs, who they said would likely just stay in the backyard all week. It was late April, so it wasn't so hot that the dogs would bake in the heat if they stayed outside, but Chelsea told me that if they started whining I should let them inside for a bit. When they had finally left for the airport I set up my rig and played video games for the rest of the day, feeding the dogs and watering the flowers as instructed.
Hours later with my headset on I almost didn't hear the dogs barking from outside. I sighed and took the headset off, pausing the game I was playing and looked at the time. It was almost midnight. Surely they were just barking at a rabbit or something, but I figured I had better go check on them. I walked into the dining room and slid the door to the backyard open. I was just about to turn on the light back there when I noticed that the dogs were standing stock still, staring out into the darkness. They had stopped barking. I looked out into the direction they were staring, toward the tree line, and with the full moon casting a wan light over the field I saw him.
The old man from two weeks ago was standing out there in the field. He was closer than the last time by probably a hundred or so feet, and to be honest I had forgotten about him until just now. He was doing the same as he had two weeks prior, just standing and staring at the house. I could feel the hair on the back of my neck and my forearms standing on end. I pulled my cell phone from my pocket and called Brian.
"Dude," Brian said into my ear after a couple of rings, "I'm on vacation. We haven't been gone twenty-four hours. This can't be that important. Did you already manage to burn the house down?"
"Sorry, Man," I said. The old man still hadn't moved and I was standing there staring back at him. "I didn't want to bother you, but...that old man from a couple weeks ago. The old rancher behind your house?"
"Yeah, what about him?"
"Have you guys seen him since?"
"Chels said she thought she saw him the other day, but she said he was walking through the trees."
"Well, he's back. Closer this time. Like, on your property closer." I could hear Chelsea talking to Brian in the background.
"Yeah," Brian answered the question I couldn't hear, "said he's on the property now." Then to me, he said, "Call the cops. If he tries to break in or something there's a .22 shotgun and some birdshot in a case in my closet. If you have to use it, just do it from a distance and aim for the legs. It's perfectly legal to shoot him as long as you don't kill him." I turned from the backyard and raced up the stairs to Brian's bedroom. I could see the old-timer through the bedroom window which faced the field.
"In your closet?" I asked.
"Yeah." I found the gun and shells quickly and ran back down the stairs, fumbling a shell into the chamber as I went. As I stepped back out into the backyard, my breath caught.
"What the fuck?" I breathed.
"What is it?"
"He's gone."
"Well, that's a good thing."
"No, Brian," I said, stepping further out into the yard. I raised the gun slightly, and held the phone in place between my shoulder and ear. "I just saw him through the window upstairs. He was only out of my sight for a few seconds. There's no way that a man that old could have gotten back to the trees in that time, even at a dead sprint." I swung left and right, thinking maybe he had approached the house, though he probably couldn't have covered that distance in the short time either. "He's just fucking gone."
"Call the cops," Brian said, punctuating the last word. He sounded worried, but was trying to keep it from his tone. "Call the cops now, and then call me back when you figure out more, okay?"
"Yeah, okay." The line went dead and I backed up to the house slowly, keeping the field in my line of sight as I dialed 911.
The police arrived about twenty minutes later and searched the property thoroughly. They came up with nothing and took a statement from me. The woman who asked all the questions sounded like she didn't believe a word I was saying. She asked if I had been drinking or had taken any drugs, and looked skeptical when I told her no. In the end, the officers told me they would go talk to the old rancher Brian had mentioned and encouraged me to call again if the man returned. They finally left about forty-five minutes after arriving. Warily, I went to the backyard and ushered the dogs inside before going through the house to lock every door and window and close all the curtains and blinds. I laid down on the couch, shotgun in close reach, and turned the TV on. I tried to fight off sleep, but it eventually came. I had that same dream again, from two weeks before. An old, kindly looking man standing over me and waving his hands as if casting a spell.
The next two days were uneventful for the most part. I played video games, watched some TV, and chatted with some friends from my World of Warcraft days. I didn't see the old man. Nothing really out of the ordinary happened, with the exception of that same damn dream of the old man. For whatever reason, I hadn't yet connected the dream to the old man in the field.
The next day the dogs were acting strange all morning, doing everything they could to get a look out the windows into the backyard. Every time I noticed it, I would look out and see nothing. When I finally let them out around noon they had been outside for no more than five minutes before I heard them barking incessantly. Hoping that the old man wasn't back and that they had just treed a cat or something, I stepped outside. The barking stopped almost instantly. Both of the dogs were standing about five feet from the storm shelter in the back yard. The barking had turned into growling and the hair on the back of my neck rose. The door to the cellar door was unlocked. No, that's not accurate. It wasn't just unlocked. The padlock on it had been busted and was laying on the ground nearby.
I should have called the police, but instead I scratched behind the dogs' ears. "Don't let him come out of there, Boys," I said and went back into the house to get the shotgun. I couldn't have been gone that long, but when I got back outside the dogs were sitting placidly and staring at the cavernous opening of the cellar. The door was open. My eyes darted about, looking for the intruder. Nothing. Slowly, every so carefully, I crept forward and flipped the switch at the top of the cellar stairs with my foot. Pale light flickered on in the underground room.
"If you're down there," I called into the hole, "you should know I have a shotgun." There was no answer. "I will shoot you!" I yelled down again after a few moments of silence. When there was no response, I started moving again with the shotgun raised to my shoulder. I crept down the stairs into the medium sized, one-room cellar. There was nothing there save for some canned goods and a few gallon jugs of water. Bewildered, I went back up the stairs and closed the door.
I called Brian and explained what had happened. He expressed his concern that I should have called the police, but said he was glad that I was okay. I heard Chelsea cursing in the background, but was unsure if it was for what had happened or something else. After hanging up with Brian I rooted around in the garage until I found another padlock, which I used to relock the cellar. I tried to put the strange events of the day out of my mind with some video games, relating what had happened to some of my online friends. They expressed the same sentiment Brian had. That night, I had the dream.
On my fifth day in the house, I caught a glimpse of the old man walking along the tree line, just on the other side as I was letting the dogs out and drinking my morning coffee. He stopped at about halfway across the backyard laterally and turned to face the house, then turned and walked back the way he had come a few paces before turning and walking into the woods. That night, I slept with the shotgun clutched to my chest, safety on of course. I didn't see him again until my last day in the house.
It was roughly an hour before Brian and Chelsea were supposed to be home. I was going to let the dogs out and when I opened the blinds covering the back door, he was about halfway to the tree line, striding purposefully toward the woods. I flung the door open, pausing momentarily to let the dogs get out first, then stepped out on the back patio.
"If I see you near this property one more time, I'll shoot you!" I shouted at him, but he didn't even slow his gait or look back. "I mean it, you old fucking creep! Stay away from this house!" Part of me wanted to grab the shotgun and run after him, but that was an idiotic idea and I knew it. I had no way of knowing if he was carrying a weapon of some sort. Even if he wasn't, what was I going to do, shoot him? Despite my threat I wouldn't do that. It would land me in prison, even if the old man was a dangerous person of interest or some such. As I turned to go back inside, I noticed a large folded sheet of paper had been taped to the siding of the house next to the back door. I took it in hands that were shaking far more than I would care to admit, and unfolded it. In big block letters it simply read, "GET OUT NOW OR YOU WILL DIE!"
When Chelsea and Brian showed up an hour later I was already packed and ready to go home, to be away from whatever the hell was going on with that old man. I showed them the note and answered a few questions. No, I hadn't shot him. No, I didn't know where he was now. No, I hadn't called the cops. Yes, I was shaken by my experiences. No, I didn't want to stay for lunch. I just wanted to go home. They asked me to stick around since they were going to call the cops and would need me to explain everything that had happened that week. It took them some twenty minutes of arguing to convince me, and Chelsea set to making a quick lunch while we waited for the cops to arrive.
When the officers finally showed up, Brian showed them the note and explained that I was the one who had found it. The cops set to barraging me with questions and when they finally left I felt like I had been raked over the coals so to speak. I wanted to be away from this place and wash my hands of the old man and all the crazy weirdness that had happened over the last week. I had packed up all my things and was coming back into the house to say my goodbyes. I hugged Brian and then Chelsea, and then I noticed a ring on her finger.
"Wait," I said, "is that a new ring?" She beamed at me. "It's on your left hand." I was so mentally exhausted that it took me far longer than it should have for my brain to make the connection. I looked from Chelsea to Brian and back. "Are you guys getting married?"
"We were going to tell you immediately," Chelsea said with a huge grin, "but your stuff seemed more pressing."
"That's awesome," I said, congratulating her with another, more enthusiastic hug and a wide smile. "Do you have a date yet?" She shook her head.
"Not yet," Brian answered, "but I think you already know I want you to be my best man."
"Hmmm," I mused, stroking my beard and pretending to think. "I might be out of town or something that day."
"Oh, shut up," Chelsea laughed and swatted me playfully on the arm. I laughed. It felt good to laugh after the week I had had. Brian gave me another hug as well and I congratulated them again before turning to leave.
"One more thing," Brian said, and I paused with my hand on the doorknob. He seemed a little hesitant, as if he were trying to find the words to tell me a hard truth. "We want you to move in." I immediately shook my head and opened my mouth to tell him no, but Chelsea jumped in, words rushing out of her one after another.
"Just think about it," she said almost pleading. "Please. We love you, and we want to help you. You've been out of work for almost six months now, and your savings are almost gone. You can't afford another month in that shithole apartment, which you hate might I add, and we have more than enough room for you here. If you're worried about the lease, Brian said he can get you out of it." Brian nodded. "We wouldn't expect anything from you until you can find a job. I know you're proud or whatever, but when you're dangling over the side of a cliff by your fingertips, you have to take the hand that's offered to you or you'll fall." She looked like she wanted to say more, but I held up a hand to silence her. She and Brian shared a significant look. When I opened my mouth to tell them firmly that I couldn't live here because of the weirdness, a strange presence seemed to wash over me and I suddenly couldn't remember what I was about to say.
"All right," I said, suddenly at ease and peace, "you've convinced me. Let me just unpack my car again and I'll go home and start packing everything up. I'll move in in a couple of days. Sound good?" They both agreed, then helped me unpack my car and I left.
When I returned three days later with a small UHaul of my stuff it was approaching midnight. I wasn't exactly speeding down the dirt road that Brian and Chelsea's driveway fed into, but at night and going forty miles per hour...well, I might as well have been hurtling at breakneck speeds. I mention that, because when a person stepped out into my path about two hundred feet down the road, I nearly rolled the damn box truck trying to get stopped. It took a good minute for the dust to settle and, whether by sheer chance or because he had moved closer, I found that the truck had stopped mere feet from the person. It was him. It was that old rancher dude. My heart lept into my throat and I grabbed one of the display katanas in the seat next to me. I used to collect them. I stepped carefully out of the truck, brandishing the sword toward the old man.
"What?" I yelled at him. "What is it? Why do you keep fucking bothering me?" He didn't answer, only stared at me with those eery blue eyes. "It has to be me you're interested in, yeah? You dont bother my friends nearly as much as me!" I took an ill-advised step toward him. My fear was gone, replaced with rage. This man had harrassed me for over a week now. I was getting some answers. As I took another step and raised the sword a little higher, weilding the scabbarded blade as a club, the man raised his hand and every muscle in my body cinched up. I couldn't move.
"Go back," the man said. He had a thick, southern drawl that was barely conveyed through the rough, almost gritty quality of his voice. "Your friends are already dead, Son. They died the night you left. Just turn around and go on back home."
"What?" I said, dumbfounded. Brian and Chelsea were dead? No, that couldn't be. I had spoken to Brian on the phone not two hours ago. "You're lying."
"I tell you the truth, Son," the geezer replied calmly. I still couldn't move. "They've been dead for three days. Now go home."
"This is my home now," I spat at him, trying my best to keep irrational fear out of my voice. He was trying to scare me or something. "I know you're lying. I talked my friend two hours ago."
"No," the old man retorted. Rage washed over me stronger now and my face contorted into a mask. The old man seemed a bit taken aback by the suddenness of it, and he lowered his hand with a loud exhalation through his nose by way of a sigh. He seemed sad suddenly. Shaking his head, he merely turned and walked off the road. Now that I could move again, I hopped back into the truck and raced the rest of the way to the house. I jumped out of the cab and sprinted to the front door where Brian and Chelsea met me on the front porch. I was so relieved I almost collapsed.
"Whoa, Dude," Brian said with a small grin, "where's the fire?" Chelsea peered at me quizzically.
"The old man," I managed to get out, gasping for air. I wasn't exactly athletic in those days. "I met him on the road here. He told me you guys were dead." Brian peered out into the darkness with more than a little worry painted on his face.
"Why would he say that?" Chelsea asked. She seemed more puzzled than worried.
"I don't know," I gasped. My breathing was still ragged, but I was starting to calm down a bit. "He just said that you guys had died the other night after I left." Chelsea ushered me into the house and sat me down at the dining room table. Brian stared out into the night a few seconds longer, then closed and locked the door.
"Let me get you a drink," Chelsea said. "We'll unload your stuff tomorrow." She took a glass out of one of the cupboards and started to fill it with water from the tap, but I shook my head.
"No," I croaked out, my throat dry. "Whiskey." She glanced at me, concerned, but nodded and poured the water out before grabbing a bottle of whiskey from the liquor shelf and splashing a few fingers into the glass with some ice she retrieved from the freezer. She set the glass down on the table in front of me and I tossed it down my gullet. She refilled the glass and rubbed my back in a matronly way.
"That old dude really has you worked up, eh?" Brian said.
"Well, after last week and being told that my two best friends were dead?" I asked. "How am I supposed to react?"
"Fair enough," Brian replied. By the time I had finished my third glass of whiskey, the alcohol was starting to do what alcohol does, and I was beginning to relax. I walked them through what had happened, and they both shared a pointed look when I told them about not being able to move my body. With the short story done, Brian grabbed a couple of beers from the fridge and set one down in front of me.
"You should probably switch to something a little lighter," he said, popping the top off with a bottle opener he kept on his keyring. We talked for a little while longer while Brian nursed his own beer. When he had finished it, he and Chelsea stood.
"Chels and I are going to head to bed," Brian said. "Sleep as late as you need tomorrow. We'll start unloading you in the morning." I nodded and bid them goodnight. I don't remember how late I stayed up, downing beer after beer, but I was good and toasty when I finally stumbled up the stairs to what was now my bedroom and slipped off into sleep.
When I woke the next day, the sun was already at its zenith. It was roughly one in the afternoon. I climbed out of bed, thankful that I somehow didn't have a hangover and headed downstairs. All of my stuff was already unloaded and there was a note on the table explaining that Brian and Chelsea had gone to return the UHaul truck and get my car from my old apartment. I smiled. Those two were too good to me. I set about unpacking my things, setting my computer up first, so I could turn on Pandora and have some music while I worked. It's odd to me now that I didn't realize that only one of the dogs was around. Brian and Chelsea returned a half hour later, bearing Thai food.
"We got you that red fish curry from Taste of Thai," Chelsea said, setting the takeout bags on the kitchen island. "Figured you might be hungover, and you're always talking about how that's your hangover food." Her grin slipped a bit, and she looked me over worriedly. "Are you doing okay?"
"Yeah," I said with a small sigh. "I'm fine now. That shit last night was just..." I couldn't find the words to express myself, and let the sentence hang in the air unfinished. Chelsea merely nodded her understanding and the three of us unpacked the food and set to eating. The rest of the day was pleasant. I got all of my stuff unpacked and put away. We talked while I worked, the two of them regaling me with stories of their vacation and telling me what they were expecting from their eventual wedding. Brian made chicken alfredo for dinner and Chelsea brought out a bottle of red wine. It was nice. Just as I was finishing up my meal, I began to feel incredibly drowsy.
"You all right, Man?" Brian asked as my head drooped.
"I don't know," I slurred. "I'm suddenly very sleepy."
"The last few days have been exhausting for you," Chelsea said knowingly. "Let's get you to bed." The two of them helped me upstairs and into bed. I was asleep almost before my head hit the pillow. A few hours later, I sat bolt upright and glanced around the room in a panic. It took several long moments to get my bearings and remember that I had moved in here. I forced myself to calm down. Nothing was wrong, although my throat was really dry. I climbed out of bed and headed downstairs to get some water.
As I came onto the first landing, I heard an odd mixture of crunching and slurping and glorping sounds. I peered around the corner and the sight turned my stomach. One of the dogs, or what was left of it, was laid out on the kitchen island. It was in pieces. Brian and Chelsea were standing over it, chewing methodically. As I watched in abjunct horror, Chelsea opened her mouth wide, far wider than should be possible, and practically inhaled a large chunk of the dog's flesh that she had just torn off. My eyes went wide, and I took a single step back, breathing heavy. My foot landed on a creaky board, and the noise that issued forth sounded like a blood curtling scream to my ears.
The two downstairs, my friends...or were they?...became motionless for half a second before tilting their heads simultaneously, each pointing an ear toward the stairs. Brian turned to look toward the stairs, staring directly at me and I could see that his eyes were too large for his head, and completely black like some sort of creature from a horror story.
"The human?" the thing that wore Chelsea's face rasped. It wasn't her voice.
"The drug you slipped into his wine should keep him unconcious well into the afternoon," the Brian-shaped creature responded. How did he not see me? I started to move ever so slowly backwards again. The reality of what was happening hadn't fully set in, but I knew deep down that when it did I would be a wreck. For now, my brain rationalized that I was hallucinating or that this was a dream. As I started to take another agonizingly slow step backward, a hand clamped over my mouth from behind me and the old man's face appeared next to mine. If he hadn't put his hand over my mouth, I would have screamed like a little girl. From my peripherals, I could see him holding a finger to his lips. Brian was still staring directly at me.
Somewhere off in the woods, there was a sudden screech like nothing I had ever heard. The heads of the creatures who wore my friends' skin snapped to the back door and an instant later they were gone with a speed that would put a cheetah to shame. Once they were gone, I elbowed the old man in the stomach and clambered up the stairs to the top landing where I bent over double and vomited.
"I told you, Son," the old man said quietly, seeming unfazed by the blow I had delivered. "Your friends are dead. Those things replaced them." I vomited again.
"What the fuck are those things?" I said hysterically, wiping at my mouth with the back of my hand and fighting to stave off another bout of regurgitation.
"Skinwalkers," the old man said solemnly.
"Skinwalkers?" I asked incredulously, turning my head to stare at him. He hadn't move from the first landing, and was regarding me calculatingly with those blue eyes. He nodded. "Like fucking Navajo spirits of the First Fucking World fucking skinwalkers?"
"Don't be daft, Boy," he said with a hint of disgust. "Those are just fairy stories. These things are real. They kill humans and wear their skin."
"Why didn't they kill me?" I asked, not really sure if I wanted the answer.
"Being around humans hides their energy and makes them harder to track," the man replied simply. "I've been huntin' this pair for a while now. Tracked them here from Colodrado. I've been tryin' to warn you for over a week, but every time you either brandished a weapon at me or the walkers stopped me from gettin' too close." There was more than a hint of resentment in his voice at that.
"Well, why haven't I seen them before?" I asked, feeling myself relax a bit. Something about this man's presence was calming.
"They're invisible to the naked eye until they take a person's skin. I can see them, because I was trained to. I was trained to track down and kill walkers." I stared at him wordlessly for a moment. His head suddenly snapped down toward the back door. "You need to leave, Son. They'll be back real soon. That distraction I caused won't keep them busy long."
"And go where?" I spluttered.
"I don't rightly care," the man said, "but anywhere that isn't here is better than bein' killed and eaten when they find out you know their secret." There was a long moment of silence where we regarded each other, and I finally turned toward my bedroom.
"I just need to get my things real quick," I said, moving hurriedly. The man grabbed the collar of my shirt and yanked me backward, turning me toward the stairs.
"There ain't no time for that," he spat. "Just go!" Something in his voice compelled me, and I went. I sprinted down the stairs, grabbed my car keys, and flung the front door open. Hitting the unlock button on my key fob over and over, I ran across the front yard toward my car barefoot and got inside and locked the doors just as one of the skinwalkers came screaming, literally screaming, around the side of the house. It spotted me in my car and was on the hood before I could even start the engine.
"Holy fuck!" I shouted, turning the key in the ignition. "Holy fucking shit!" The engine roared to life, and a hand with claws like knives crashed through the windshield toward me. I closed my eyes, screaming in falsetto, knowing this was the end of me. Death did not come. Claws scraped across my cheek and left shallow cuts, but that was it. I opened my eyes slowly and saw the thing getting to its feet twenty feet away. The old man was standing in front of the car.
"GO!" he shouted and raised a hand to the skinwalker. Light seemed to be coallescing in his palm. "GO!" he yelled again without looking back at me. I went. The rest of the night, and the next few months, are a bit of a blur. I don't remember much except speaking to the police about it. When they went out to check the scene, they found the house empty. There were no signs of any kind of struggle. No blood where I was positive there should have been. Over the last five years, through therapy and a healthy heaping dose of denial, I had forgotten all about the events of that night and the month or so leading up to it. However, last night as I was smoking on my front porch I saw an old, wizened man across the street, staring at me. My wife can tell something's wrong, and she's asking questions I don't know if I can answer.

2018.06.20 02:01 assessment_bot [ Fatal(1) ] [ 05/25/2018 ] BEECH D17S, Santa Fe/ NM

On May 25, 2018, about 1342 mountain daylight time (all times referenced as mountain daylight time), a Beech D17S single-engine airplane, N79091, impacted terrain near Santa Fe, New Mexico. The commercial pilot was fatally injured, and the airplane sustained substantial damage. The airplane was registered to and operated by Mid Continent Instrument Company, Inc., under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 91. Day visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the business flight that departed Perryton/Ochiltree County Airport (PYX) about 1150 with the intended destination of Albuquerque International Sunport Airport (ABQ), Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The operator reported that the pilot had departed Wichita, Kansas, earlier in the day and that he made a fuel stop at PYX before continuing to ABQ for a planned overnight stop. Fueling documentation established that the pilot purchased 39.32 gallons of 100 low-lead aviation fuel at 1035 after landing at PYX. According to preliminary aircraft radar track data, the airplane appeared on radar at 1152:23 about 1.5 nautical miles (nm) southwest of PYX and proceeded to climb to a cruise altitude of 10,500 ft mean sea level (msl) while on a direct track toward ABQ. The only communication the pilot had with air traffic control was when he requested visual flight rules (VFR) flight following with Albuquerque Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC). The airplane continued toward ABQ at 10,500 ft msl until 1340:11 when it entered a descent. The final radar track return was recorded at 1342:48 at 7,900 ft msl (650 feet above the ground). The final radar return was about 1.25 nm east-northeast of the accident site. An alert notice (ALNOT) was issued by air traffic control and a United States Air Force search-and-rescue helicopter crew located the wreckage about midnight.
An onsite investigation was completed by inspectors with the FAA Albuquerque Flight Standards District Office. The FAA inspectors reported that the airplane impacted several pinon trees before coming to rest in a nose down attitude. The debris path was on a 233 magnetic heading. The airplane's recording hour meter indicated 1,351.1 hours. Both upper and lower wings sustained impact damage during the accident sequence. The left wing was heavily fragmented, and the right wing remained partially attached to the fuselage. The fuselage remained intact with relatively minor damage to the cabin and cockpit. The odor of 100 low-lead aviation fuel was observed at the accident site. The airplane's fuel tanks were ruptured during impact; however, there was residual fuel observed in the tanks. The carburetor accelerator pump discharged fuel when the throttle arm was moved. The engine oil supply tank ruptured during impact and there was oil covering the firewall, aft side of the engine, and portions of the windscreen.
The wreckage was recovered from the accident site to facilitate a more detailed examination. A follow-up examination was completed by investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the airframe manufacturer. Flight control cable continuity was established from the individual control surfaces to the cockpit controls through several cable overload separations and cuts made during wreckage recovery. The flap actuator positions were consistent with the wing flaps being up at impact. The landing gear was in the fully retracted position. The cockpit fuel selector was positioned to draw fuel from the upper right fuel tank. There were no anomalies noted with the fuel selector valve during a functional test using compressed air. The outflow fuel line from the fuel selector valve contained residual fuel. The engine driven fuel pump rotated by hand and discharged a fluid that had an odor consistent with 100 low-lead aviation fuel. The engine crankshaft was rotated by applying electrical power to the starter motor. Internal engine and valve train continuity were confirmed as the engine crankshaft was rotated. Apart from engine cylinders no. 5 and 6, compression and suction were noted on all cylinders as the crankshaft was rotated. The no. 5 cylinder exhibited impact related damage to the valve push rods that precluded normal valve movement. The entire no. 6 cylinder head had separated from the cylinder barrel. Several pieces of the no. 6 cylinder head, including the exhaust valve, were recovered along the wreckage debris path at the accident site; however, the No. 6 cylinder intake valve was not recovered during the investigation. The spark plugs were removed and exhibited features consistent with normal engine operation. The No. 6 cylinder was removed to examine the internal engine components. There was ample engine oil throughout the engine and no evidence of oil starvation on the drivetrain components. Both magnetos provided spark while the engine crankshaft was rotated. The two-bladed propeller exhibited chordwise scratches and leading-edge damage on both blades. One propeller blade exhibited a S-shape bend and the other propeller was bent aft midspan.
According to FAA records, the 53-year-old pilot held a commercial pilot certificate with single-engine land airplane and instrument airplane ratings. His most recent FAA second-class medical certificate was issued on August 24, 2017, with a limitation for corrective lenses. The pilot's flight history was established using his logbook. The final logbook entry was dated April 22, 2018, at which time he had 4,541 hours total flight time, all in single-engine airplanes. He had logged 4,503.7 hours as pilot-in-command, 236.1 hours at night, 34.1 hours in actual instrument meteorological conditions, and 62.3 hours in simulated instrument conditions. According to the airplane utilization log, the pilot flew an additional 50.9 hours since his final pilot logbook entry. The pilot had accumulated 1,316.7 hours in Beech D17S airplanes. The pilot's most recent flight review, as required by 14 CFR 61.56, was completed on March 6, 2018, in a Cessna 172.
The 1941-model-year airplane, serial number 1020, was a biplane of fabric-covered steel tube and wood construction. The airplane was powered by a 450-horsepower, 9-cylinder, Pratt & Whitney R-985-AN-14B reciprocating radial engine, serial number JP-215473. The engine provided thrust through a constant-speed, two-blade, Hamilton Standard 2D30-6167A-15 propeller, serial number B3881. The four-seat airplane was equipped with a retractable conventional landing gear, wing flaps, and had a maximum allowable takeoff weight of 4,250 pounds. According to maintenance documentation, the last annual inspection was completed on December 31, 2017, at 4,828.7 total airframe hours. The airplane had accumulated 131.4 hours since the last annual inspection. The airframe and engine had accumulated a total service time of 4,960.1 hours when the accident occurred. The engine had accumulated 851.1 hours since being overhauled on April 24, 2014. A postaccident review of the maintenance records found no history of unresolved airworthiness issues.
A postaccident review of available meteorological data established that day visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the accident site. The nearest aviation weather reporting station was located at Moriarty Airport (0E0) about 28 miles southwest of the accident site. At 1335, about 7 minutes before the accident, the 0E0 automated surface observing system reported: wind 310 at 4 knots, 10 miles surface visibility, a clear sky, temperature 31C, dew point -4C, and an altimeter setting 30.18 inches of mercury.

2018.05.01 20:54 RuthlessNate56 Old sighting, circa early 2000s, that I felt the need to share.

First off, I apologize for the lack of details in terms of the exact date, as it was a long time ago. I was 11 or 12 then, and am approaching my 30th birthday now. A little context for why my memory is a little hazy in this regard: My family has lived in Oklahoma City most of my life and, at the time, my grandparents were living in a town in north/central Kansas. We made the trip up there a lot, at points even weekly, so that my dad could help out my grandparents with things around the house. Because I made this trip so often in my youth, it’s difficult for me to pinpoint exactly when it was.
I believe it was the summer of 2000, probably in June or July, a couple months before my 12th birthday, though it may have been in 2001. It was late in the evening, and I was sitting in the back row of my family’s van. We were heading north on Kansas State Highway 15, somewhere between Goessel, KS, and Abilene, KS. I believe specifically it was between Goessel and Durham, but I’m not 100% sure.
The sun was low, just above the horizon, so it was still fairly bright to the west. I had taken a moment to look up from whatever I was doing at the time (book or Game Boy), and looked out at the setting sun. Just above and few degrees to the right of the sun was a bright white light. The fact that it was so bright while being relatively close to the sun in the sky got my attention. I was curious and started looking at the light more intently, but didn’t mention it to anyone else in the car.
At first, I thought it was a plane, as a reflection off the hull or running lights might have explained why it was so bright. But the light was not moving in the sky, it remained stationary. So then I concluded that it must have been Venus, but again I thought it was too bright to be that close to the sun.
Again, I didn’t speak up about it because I was a self-conscious pre-teen who didn’t want to look dumb. I went back to what I was doing but kept looking up at the light frequently, so see if things changed as the sun went further down.
I’d say within five to fifteen minutes of my decision to ignore it, a shadow caught my attention. A Rockwell B-1B Lancer had flown almost directly over us at a low altitude, I’d say between one and five thousand feet up, as it looked pretty large overhead. It was flying toward the western horizon. B-1s have a variable-sweep wing, which swing out wide at subsonic speeds, which was the way this plane’s wings were deployed. It was flying low and slow.
It was then that I noticed the light slowly start to move from its stationary position, toward the plane. The light’s speed seemed to increased as it got closer to the plane. For a split second, I thought they were going to collide. As it got closer I saw it as less of a point of light and more as a glowing white sphere. Its diameter was maybe about the size of the plane’s cockpit to about ¼ of the plane’s length, so probably no more than 30 ft., if that. It seemed very small.
Right at the moment that I thought they were going to collide, the light shot vertically into the atmosphere, faster than I’ve ever seen anything fly, and disappeared. It was almost like a reversed shooting star. The plane just kept on flying. I kick myself because I didn’t have the presence of mind to watch whether the plane banked away after that or not. I was so stunned that I just kind of froze. I didn’t talk about it because, again, I didn’t want to look dumb.
The whole encounter from first seeing the plane to the object disappearing probably only last about ten to fifteen seconds.
My father had been in the Air Force all my life at that point, and I had lived in and around bases the whole time, watching planes. Between the hovering, the rocketing into the sky, and the speed, I can tell you that this did not move like a plane.
I’m sharing this today because it’s been on my mind recently after the footage the Navy has released of UFOs taken by F-18 hornets. The objects in those videos are eerily reminiscent of what I saw that night.
Edit: I just wanted to add that I discussed the sighting with my dad weeks later. He told me that, at the time, there was a squadron of B1-Bs at McConnell AFB in Wichita.

2018.04.24 19:11 patriotsfan543 2018 /r/MLBDraft Mod Mock 1.0

Hey everyone, so we as the moderators decided to put together our own mock with write-ups!. Unfortunately due to the fact that we decided to include the write ups and we all lead busy lives we had delay after delay. So what this means is this mock is out of date as we did it about 3 weeks ago. But even with this, I felt like I should still post as the write-ups can make it easier for you guys to learn a little more about the kids.
1 Detroit Tigers: LHP Shane McClanahan, South Florida
The Tigers have their pick of the litter in this very strong pitching class. They take the best lefty in the class. McClanahan has a 3.22 ERA s far on the year, and has 84 strikeouts through 50 IP. His draft stock has taken a pretty big hit and it now seems like Mize is the favorite to go 1.1.
2 San Francisco Giants: RHP Casey Mize, Auburn
The Giants get their decision basically made for them, Mize has been discussed a lot about going 1-1 and very well may. At Auburn so far Mize has a 2.00 ERA and 7-1 record, along with 86 K over 63 IP. Mize also tossed a no-hitter back in March. Giants would be happy with Mize falling to them.
3 Philadelphia Phillies: 3B Nolan Gorman, O'Connor HS (AZ)
Gorman goes pretty high here compared to the consensus, but there is a lot to like about him. He is a lefty hitter with a lot of power in the bat. He displayed his power in summer ball. There are a few concerns with Gorman and that is he may not stick at 3B and there are some holes in his swing so he may strikeout at a higher rate. For these reasons he may drop from here, but the power is undeniable.
4 Chicago White Sox: RHP Ethan Hankins , Forsyth Central HS (GA)
Probably the best prep pitcher in this class, Ethan Hankins is taken by the White Sox to supplement that already stacked farm. Hankins had an injury scare(shoulder) earlier this spring, but is back on the mound and seems to be healthy. Hankins has a good frame, standing at 6’6’ 200 lbs, and his fastball can reach the high-90s. Might even go higher than 4 come draft day.
5 Cincinnati Reds: LHP Matt Liberatore, Mountain Ridge HS (AZ)
The best lefty prep pitcher of the class is Matthew Liberatore and he plays in the same state as Nolan Gorman, not too far from each other. Liberatore has a three pitch mix: FB, CB, CH and all three are quality pitches, a rarity from a prep pitcher. He sits in the low-90s, but can reach mid-90s pretty often. Liberatore is an interesting prospect because he’s a high schooler, but there isn’t a ton of projection there. Could rise through the ranks pretty quickly.
6 New York Mets: RHP Brady Singer, Florida
The Mets could potentially get a pretty big steal here at #6. Brady Singer was the consensus #1 pick for 2018 dating back to last year, but the consensus has changed. It’s not entirely Singer’s fault, the prospects ahead of him have really jumped out. Singer has had a pretty solid spring, albeit with a few clunkers in there, but even when he struggles he still racks up the K’s. Singer could definitely go higher than 6, but the Mets would love if he falls here.
7 San Diego Padres: OF Travis Swaggerty, South Alabama
Besides having an 80 grade name, Swaggerty has some other tools. Swaggerty is a junior at South Alabama and is having a solid year. He has a .314 BA with 9 HR. Swaggerty has the speed and power combination that everyone loves and projects to be a top of the order bat. 7th may be a bit high for Swaggerty, but he’s having a solid spring so far.
8 Atlanta Braves: C Joey Bart, Georgia Tech
Joey Bart is by far the best catching prospect in this draft and maybe the best catching prospect in a while. He is hitting .357 with 11 home runs at Georgia Tech so far this season. He has the bat, but he also has the defense to go along with it. Despite being rather large for a catcher at 6’3”/225 he can move well behind the plate and has a cannon of an arm. Braves would love to get him here after all the top pitchers come off the board.
9 Oakland Athletics: 2B Nick Madrigal, Oregon State
Nick Madrigal could end up going higher than 9, but an injury suffered early in the season has kept him out of action.
10 Pittsburgh Pirates: LHP Ryan Rolison, Mississippi
Rolison is a the 2nd best lefty in this draft and is going to an organization with a strong affinity for pitching. With the right adjustments, Rolison could be the #2 guy on your staff.
11 Baltimore Orioles: SS Nander de Sedas, Montverde Academy
De Sedas is a switch-hitting SS with a good hitting ability. Problem a lot of people have with him is his ability(or lack thereof) to stick at SS and he might have to move to 3B. Rankings have been all over the place with him, some have him top 10 and some have him outside top 50.
12 Toronto Blue Jays: 1B Triston Casas, American Heritage HS
In the past, drafting a 1B this early was considered to be a bad pick, however with the success of guys like Freddie Freeman, Bellinger, etc, teams are now more willing to take a chance. Casas has great power from the left side, perhaps the best of all the high school players in this draft. While he’s likely a 1B only guy, if he keeps hitting it won’t matter.
13 Miami Marlins: SS Brice Turang, Santiago HS
The Marlins are getting a potential steal with Turang at 13. He’s got extremely strong tools that will make any scout dream big, all while staying at short.
14 Seattle Mariners: OF Tristan Pompey, Kentucky
Pompey has a lot of raw tools at his disposal and there’s a lot to like about this kid. He is hitting .349 on the season at Kentucky. I think Mid-1st round is a good prediction as of now for him.
15 Texas Rangers: 3B Alec Bohm, Wichita State
Alec Bohm at 15 is a dream for the Rangers. Bohm can just hit, and he can do it with good defense at 3B. Anyone who drafts him is getting a solid player, and he’ll move up quickly too. Recent mocks have him as high as #2.
16 Tampa Bay Rays: RHP Kumar Rocker, North Oconee HS (GA)
The Rays are getting a prep arm with a lot of upside with Rocker. They’re saying he’s a tough start which makes it seem a little unlikely the Rays will pick him, however. Rocker is a little raw but when he harnesses it, watch out.
17 Los Angeles Angels: RHP Jackson Kowar, Florida
Kowar could be 1 of 3 Gators to be drafted in the 1st round. Kowar has a 2.70 ERA so far this season as the Gators’ Saturday starter. He sits in low 90s and has a very good changeup and his curve is his third pitch that is developing.
18 Kansas City Royals: RHP Mason Denaburg, Merritt Island HS (FL)
Denaburg is a prep pitcher who sits in low to mid 90s with a plus curveball and an average change. Was shut down 2 weeks ago with biceps tendinitis, but they don’t believe it’s a serious issue. Can also play at Catcher, but is a better RHP.
19 St. Louis Cardinals: 1B Luken Baker, TCU
Unfortunately Luken Baker suffered a broken bone in his leg running the bases and is out for the forseeable future. His draft stock is going to tank and it could be a possibility he returns to TCU for his senior year.
20 Minnesota Twins: OF Jarred Kelenic, Waukesha West HS (WI)
Kelenic has been rumored to go 1-1 with the Tigers. Kelenic is a toolsy OF, but there are concerns whether or not he can stick to center. He has a good mix of contact and power. His speed is also no joke either.
21 Milwaukee Brewers: LHP Ryan Weathers, Loretto HS (TN)
Coming in at 6’2”, 225 lbs...Weathers is a big lefty. He has dominated the Tennessee HS baseball scene. He is a Vandy committ, but if he goes in 1st round seems like signability won’t be a huge issue.
22 Colorado Rockies: OF Trevor Larnach, Oregon State
Larnach is leading the Beavers in home runs with 12 on the season and is hitting a .341 clip. The lefty outfielder is having a good year...may be able to get himself in the mid-1st, but here seems to be where he’s been going in mocks.
23 New York Yankees: LHP Konnor Pilikington , Mississippi State
The Yankees love their college arms in the 1st round(Kaprielian, Schmidt) and if there is one thing their farm is lacking it is left-handed pitchers. Pilkington seems like a perfect fit here.
24 Chicago Cubs: 1B Greyson Jenista, Wichita State
Only behind fellow Shocker Alec Bohm, Jenista is 2nd on the team with a .311 avg and 2nd on the team behind Bohm again in home runs(7).
25 Arizona Diamondbacks: C Will Banfield, Brookwood HS (GA)
Banfield is pretty much the consensus #2 catcher behind Bart...may end up going higher due to position scarcity.
26 Boston Red Sox: RHP Carter Stewart
Carter Stewart has gotten rave reviews for his curveball; Baseball America has it at a 3,826 average RPM. His curveball might be one of the single best pitches of any potential draftee. He’s only a high school guy as well, so there’s a lot of projection still left.
27 Washington Nationals, LHP Tim Cate, UCONN
28 Houston Astros, SS Jeremy Eierman, Missouri State
29 Cleveland Indians, RHP Logan Gilbert, Stetson
30 Los Angeles Dodgers, 3B Jon India, Florida
32 Tampa Bay Rays(Comp for Alex Cobb), 1B Seth Beer, Clemson
32 Tampa Bay Rays(Comp for Drew Rasmussen), RHP Mike Vasil, BC High
31 Kansas City Royals(Comp for Lorenzo Cain) OF Joe Gray Jr., Hattiesburg HS
33 Kansas City Royals(Comp for Eric Hosmer), C Noah Naylor, Ontario
34 Cleveland Indians(Comp for Carlos Santana)RHP Sean Hjelle, Kentucky

2018.02.19 03:12 Zthorn777 Wife was speeding and also had incorrect liscense due to a mistake

My wife was pulled over due to expired tags NOT speeding like the title incorrectly states.
The plates were expired by 29 days. The officer then notices that the plates were on a unregistered vehicle. The officer then gave a date to appear in court to my wife instead of a traditional fine. We are located in Wichita, Kansas.
What had happened with the plates is when the vehicle transferred possession from her parents to her, I put the new plates on. She them put the old ones back on the vehicle, thinking it was the new plate. The correct plates were not renewed with that current year.
Since this issue isn't too common, we don't know what to expect in court at all tomorrow (which is the court date). If someone could just help with a brief description of what we will experience/or what to prepare for. Hopefully this will help her anxiety since neither of us has dealt with anything like this.

2016.11.20 22:03 pugnaciousp 128 days and 10k miles later...

Four months after delivery, I've crossed 10,000 miles and I'd like to share my thoughts on the Tesla and EV life in general. There are plenty of reviews surrounding the features and functionality of the Tesla, so I will focus on what life with a Tesla is like from my perspective.
Sparky
Background
I live in Kansas City and lease a loft downtown. A Model S has been on my wishlist for a while now and once the 60 option was reintroduced, I decided to pull the trigger. After delivery, I've added the following: ceramic tint (legal on windows, one less than legal on the back), weathertech mats, Tesla trunk mats, Tesla 14-30 adapter, removed front license plate, and oem sun shades for the pano.
My car prior was a 2013 Honda Accord Coupe. The four cylinder option allowed me to average 30 mpg and a tank would always last me 400+ miles. This made the change to 215 miles per "tank" pretty drastic but I was willing to give up some convenience to drive a Tesla.
EV Life
Learning about the units, charging locations, and seeing how far I can stretch the battery has been one of the most enjoyable parts of owning this car. I made the switch from "distance" (miles left) to "energy" (%) units weeks into ownership and haven't looked back.
Kansas City has got to be one of the best cities for EV drivers with thousands of conveniently-placed, public, free ChargePoints and a Supercharger in Independence. I didn't have access to a charger every night, but three sets of ChargePoints were within walking distance and the Supercharger was 15 minutes down the road. Occasionally I would leave the car in the public lot on the ChargePoint over night, or I would just visit the Supercharger for a quick fill up. The 60 kWh battery was more than adequate for my needs while filling up about once a week. I had the 75 kWh battery that was limited to 60 kWh so I charged it to 100% as often as I could. I would genuinely recommend a 60 kWh battery if you had access to a dedicated charger and wanted to get into a Tesla on a budget.
Long Distance Travel
Road trips with the Tesla are a slow and steady process, however the combination of AP and Supercharger stops allow for a more relaxed experience. With the smallest battery, I charged frequently and for longer durations than most would need to. While there are lots of issues with city driving, AP works beautifully on the highway. You become comfortable with the functionality and instinctively know when to take over. I'd estimate that 75% of my overall miles were done with AP. The goal is to get up to speed asap so you can turn on AP. This will reduce the amount of serious, manual engagement to just charge stops and city driving. Usually, I'd set AP at the speed limit and reduce speed if range anxiety kicks in.
I made two round trips from KC to Colorado (Denver 1200 mi and Aspen 1700 mi round trip) and multiple trips from KC to Wichita to visit my parents (380 mi round trip). Driving in the mountains was very interesting with my efficiency ranging from -400 to 800 Wh/mile. Plan for 20-25% extra time from a normal ICE trip. The Trip view in the Energy app is pretty accurate -- I usually arrive within 7-10% of the estimate. Range anxiety disappears completely after your first successful trip. I've got the smallest battery and I'm confident I can make it to any of the superchargers in the states.
The Bad
Purchase and delivery were a cumbersome experience. I had little to no communication from the DS from the point of design confirmation to actual delivery. The financing was rushed and finalized literally hours before pick up. After repeated requests, I had issues with Tesla issuing the title correctly which affected insurance downstream. This was the worst car buying experience I've ever had.
My car had a handful of quality control issues upon delivery -- paint blemish on the left rear quarter-panel, uneven chrome trim, and minor upholstery issues. The car definitely does not feel like a $80k+ luxury vehicle, but I was already expecting this after stalking TMC and this sub. I would be much more furious if I purchased a P100D and dealt with the same issues. A couple weeks after delivery, I was provided a loaner (2012 85) and the service center took care of all issues within 7 days.
After my longest trip out to Aspen and back, I took the car in a second time for some major issues -- loose dash and exposed rubber seal around the top left of the touchscreen, frunk leak, and a firmware reboot. I was experiencing intermittent, spontaneous issues (glove box unresponsive, windows unresponsive, car tried to summon itself while at the supercharger, random accelerating when approaching a light). The service center said that the logs looked "weird", so the recommendation was to do a hard reboot. I was provided with another loaner (2013 P85) and had my car back hours later.
I do want to note that my experience with the Tesla service center team has been extremely positive. The staff was honest and transparent with the issues, resolution, current status, and timelines. The guys even let me check out an AP2 car with a glass roof that had just rolled off the truck and going through the firmware updates.
Conclusion
In my short time with this car, I've met tons of Tesla owners, Tesla fans, and so many curious people. When asked about the experience and ownership, I try to be as transparent as possible. The company is young; they're going to have quality control issues. EV isn't widely adopted yet; it will be more inconvenient than a traditional gas car. But at the end of the day, all issues included, I am extremely happy with my Tesla and cannot wait to buy my next one.
I'm convinced this is the best car available for purchase today, and there is no car I'd rather be driving around. Driving is enjoyable and effortless for long distances. The technology and user experience are light years ahead of the competition. The warranties, regular software updates, and service center team are proof to me that Tesla is a company that stands by their product.
Early next year, I'm planning an extensive road trip to tour the US -- living off the supercharger network, camping at national parks, occasional car camping, and working remotely.
This car is a remarkable piece of technology from an amazing company. I'm glad to be a part of the future. To many more miles!
TL;DR
EV living is new and different. Range anxiety is overrated. Long distance travel isn't for everyone. Expect quality control issues, but support from Tesla. I LOVE THIS CAR.

2014.12.06 20:10 5643354635 Thoughts and Quotes on Information Warfare

The information war cannot be won because of the huge difference in financial funding and intelligence. People simply can't win against groups being funded by a whole government with much more resources regarding intelligence, manpower, technology and research. I wouldn't be suprised if most places - with a serious consideration of the UFO phenomenon being partially extraterrestrial - are constantly monitored and manipulated by the use of different strategies. I advice everyone reading about UFOs and everyone on this subreddit to use pure logical deduction based on facts and credible eye-witness accounts, and to look out for any attempts at manipulating peoples views and attitudes by the use of irrational or derailing arguments - which may likely happen, even here.
Quotes from the Wikipedia article of Project Blue Book
In their final report, they stressed that low-grade, unverifiable UFO reports were overloading intelligence channels, with the risk of missing a genuine conventional threat to the U.S. Therefore, they recommended the Air Force de-emphasize the subject of UFOs and embark on a debunking campaign to lessen public interest. They suggested debunkery through the mass media, including Walt Disney Productions, and using psychologists, astronomers, and celebrities to ridicule the phenomenon and put forward prosaic explanations. Furthermore, civilian UFO groups "should be watched because of their potentially great influence on mass thinking… The apparent irresponsibility and the possible use of such groups for subversive purposes should be kept in mind."

In December 1953, Joint Army-Navy-Air Force Regulation number 146 made it a crime for military personnel to discuss classified UFO reports with unauthorized persons. Violators faced up to two years in prison and/or fines of up to $10,000.

As an immediate consequence of the Robertson Panel recommendations, in February 1953, the Air Force issued Regulation 200-2, ordering air base officers to publicly discuss UFO incidents only if they were judged to have been solved, and to classify all the unsolved cases to keep them out of the public eye.

The same month, investigative duties started to be taken on by the newly formed 4602nd Air Intelligence Squadron (AISS) of the Air Defense Command. The 4602nd AISS was tasked with investigating only the most important UFO cases with intelligence or national security implications. These were deliberately siphoned away from Blue Book, leaving Blue Book to deal with the more trivial reports.

All this was done secretly. The public face of Blue Book continued to be the official Air Force investigation of UFOs, but the reality was it had essentially been reduced to doing very little serious investigation, and had become almost solely a public relations outfit with a debunking mandate. To cite one example, by the end of 1956, the number of cases listed as unsolved had dipped to barely 0.4 percent, from the 20 to 30% only a few years earlier.

However, Ruppelt later came to embrace the Blue Book perspective that there was nothing extraordinary about UFOs; he even labeled the subject a "Space Age Myth."

In March 1954, Captain Charles Hardin was appointed the head of Blue Book. However, most UFO investigations were conducted by the 4602nd, and Hardin had no objection. Ruppelt wrote that Hardin "thinks that anyone who is even interested [in UFOs] is crazy. They bore him."
Its kinda funny how obvious the manipulation of the public eye became. 'Crazy' 'Space Age Myth' I mean come on, couldn't they make it even more obvious that they are trying to manipulate? People in their position are normally highly-logical beings and make sound deductions without the use of charged words.
In 1955, the Air Force decided that the goal of Blue Book should be not to investigate UFO reports, but rather to reduce the number of unidentified UFO reports to a minimum. By late 1956, the number of unidentifed sightings had dropped from the 20-25% of the Ruppelt era, to less than 1%.

In 1960, there were U.S. Congressional hearings regarding UFOs. Civilian UFO research group NICAP had publicly charged Blue Book with covering up UFO evidence, and had also acquired a few allies in the U.S. Congress. Blue Book was investigated by the Congress and the CIA, with critics—most notably the civilian UFO group NICAP[9] asserting that Blue Book was lacking as a scientific study. In response, ATIC added personnel (increasing the total personnel to three military personnel, plus civilian secretaries) and increased Blue Book's budget. This seemed to mollify some of Blue Book's critics,[9] that but it was only temporary. A few years later (see below), the criticism would be even louder.

Major Hector Quintanilla took over as Blue Book's leader in August 1963. He largely continued the debunking efforts, and it was under his direction that Blue Book received some of its sharpest criticism. UFO researcher Jerome Clark goes so far as to write that, by this time, Blue Book had "lost all credibility."

Blue Book's explanations of UFO reports were not universally accepted, however, and critics — including some scientists — suggested that Project Blue Book was engaged in questionable research or, worse, perpetrating cover up.[9] This criticism grew especially strong and widespread in the 1960s.

Take for example, the many mostly nighttime UFO reports from the midwestern and southeastern United States in the summer of 1965: Witnesses in Texas reported "multicolored lights" and large aerial objects shaped like eggs or diamonds.[9] The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported that Tinker Air Force Base (near Oklahoma City) had tracked up to four UFO's simultaneously, and that several of them had descended very rapidly: from about 22000 feet to about 4000 feet in just a few seconds,[9] an action well beyond the capabilities of conventional aircraft of the era. John Shockley, a meteorologist from Wichita, Kansas, reported that, using the state Weather Bureau radar, he tracked a number of odd aerial objects flying at altitudes between about 6000 and 9000 feet.[9] These and other reports received wide publicity.

Project Blue Book officially determined[9] the witnesses had mistaken Jupiter or bright stars (such as Rigel or Betelgeuse) for something else.

Another case that Blue Book's critics seized upon was the so-called Portage County UFO Chase, which began at about 5.00am, near Ravenna, Ohio on April 17, 1966. Police officers Dale Spaur and Wilbur Neff spotted what they described as a disc-shaped, silvery object with a bright light emanating from its underside, at about 1000 feet in altitude.[9][13] They began following the object (which they reported sometimes descended as low as 50 feet), and police from several other jurisdictions were involved in the pursuit. The chase ended about 30 minutes later near Freedom, Pennsylvania, some 85 miles away.

The UFO chase made national news, and the police submitted detailed reports to Blue Book. Five days later, following brief interviews with only one of the police officers (but none of the other ground witnesses), Blue Book's director, Major Hector Quintanilla, announced their conclusions: The police (one of them an Air Force gunner during the Korean War) had first chased a communications satellite, then the planet Venus.

Criticism of Blue Book continued to grow through the mid-1960s. NICAP's membership ballooned to about 15,000, and the group charged the U.S. Government with a cover-up of UFO evidence.

An Air Force memorandum (released via the Freedom of Information Act) dated October 20, 1969 and signed by Brigadier General C.H. Bolander states that even after Blue Book was dissolved, that "reports of UFOs" would still "continue to be handled through the standard Air Force procedure designed for this purpose." Furthermore, wrote Bolander, "Reports of unidentified flying objects which could affect national security … are not part of the Blue Book system."[32] To date, these other investigation channels, agencies or groups are unknown.

Additionally, Blum reports[7] that Freedom of Information Act requests show that the U.S. Air Force has continued to catalog and track UFO sightings, particularly a series of dozens of UFO encounters from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s that occurred at U.S. military facilities with nuclear weapons. Blum writes that some of these official documents depart drastically from the normally dry and bureaucratic wording of government paperwork, making obvious the sense of "terror" that these UFO incidents inspired in many U.S.A.F. personnel.
Conclusion: Theres is a ton of cases which are classified and will never meet the public eye. We are and will be kept in the dark.
Quotes from the MUFON website on the Washington Case (1952):
White House concern may possibly have resulted in an order to shoot down the UFOs, reported in various International News Service (INS) stories on July 29, 1952. E.g., one such story reported that "jet pilots have been placed on a 24-hour nationwide 'alert against the flying saucers' with orders to 'shoot them down' if they ignore orders to land." An Air Force public information officer, Lt. Col. Moncel Monte, confirmed the directive stating, "The jet pilots are, and have been, under orders to investigate unidentified objects and to shoot them down if they can't talk them down." It was further stated that no pilot had been able to get close enough to take a shot at a “flying saucer”, as the objects would disappear or speed away as soon as an interceptor approached, sometimes outflying their pilots by “as much as a thousand miles an hour.”

However, in seeming contradiction to the admitted “shoot-down” order, Air Force headquarters also put out statements that the unidentified flying objects were no threat to the United States and not controlled by “a reasoning body.”

Also, according to Ruppelt, when he was able to interview the radar and control tower personnel at Washington National Airport, not a single person agreed with the Air Force explanation. Michael Wertheimer, a researcher for the government-funded Condon Report, investigated the case in 1966. He found that the radar witnesses still disputed the Air Force explanation, but that did not stop the report from agreeing with the temperature inversion/mirage explanation. Ruppelt related that on July 27 the control tower at Washington National had called the control tower at Andrews AFB and notified them that their radar had an unknown object just south of the Andrews control tower, directly over the Andrews AFB radio range station. According to Ruppelt, when the Andrews control tower personnel looked they all saw "a huge fiery-orange sphere" hovering over the range station. When Ruppelt interviewed the tower personnel several days later, they insisted that they had been mistaken and had merely seen a bright star. However, when Ruppelt checked an astronomical chart he found that there were no bright stars over the station that night, and that he had "heard from a good source that the tower men had been 'persuaded' a bit" by superior officers to claim that their sighting was merely a star.

Dr. James E. McDonald, a physicist at the University of Arizona and a prominent ufologist in the 1960s, did his own analysis of the Washington sightings. After interviewing four pilot eyewitnesses and five radar personnel, McDonald argued that the Air Force explanation was "physically impossible." Harry Barnes told McDonald that the radar targets "were not shapeless blobs such as one gets from ground returns under anomalous propagation", and that he was certain the unknown radar blips were solid targets.
Top 10 UFO cases of 2012 according to the MUFON website
It blows my mind that there are people out there who don't believe UFOs exist. These are flying solid structures with an extremely advanced propulsion technology. The evidence is groundbreaking. Most people are either already manipulated into ridiculing the phenomenon without any consideration of the data out there or simply not quite informed. The manipulation is real and ongoing. Anyone with Asperger's syndrome is less prone to social manipulation. That is the reason people such as these are more likely to come forward and to discuss the matter with a clear unbiased mind.
The only question is whether they are made by an extraterrestrial civilization - which is not unlikely - or some foreign government in possession of mysterious technology since the beginning of the century.
Draw your own conclusion.
